Popular Pond Plants Found At Pond Hobby

Plants put the “garden” in your water garden and are a great way to add colour and soften the rocky edges of your pond. Everyone has their favourite collection of pond plants, but there might be some varieties that you haven’t yet added to your pond. We invite you to consider the following list of popular aquatic pond plants that make a welcome addition to any feature! All the beautiful aquatic plants listed below can be found in our Nursery, we look forward to seeing you!

1) Lobelia cardinalis

One of the most popular aquatic plants found at Pond Hobby, unfortunately, we never get to hold on to these long enough to see them bloom! But, our returning customers always let us know how very happy with this purchase they are. This vivid red flower is guaranteed to attract a mulitude of wildlife to your pond. Furthermore, it requires minimal effort to look after, and typically flowers without any human interference.

2) Iris pseudacoras

Commonly known as the yellow flag Iris, Iris pseudacorus is often seen in boggy areas or growing in shallow water at the edge of a pond. This stunning plant, is Irelands only native Iris species. While we stock alternative Iris species also, this variant is definitely our most popular. This species usually flowers between May-July and usually requires very little effort or interference from its owner!

3) Equisetum japonicum

A vigorous evergreen perennial known to grow to 1.2m tall, with hollow, black-banded, bamboo-like stems. A good ,low maintenance vertical accent plant for a pond margin, as it is evergreen, it is great for providing year round intertest in the pond.

4) Schizostylis coccinea 'Mrs Hegarty'

Schizostylis coccinea, commonly referred to as “Mrs Hegarty” are semi-evergreen rhizomatous perennials. They fashion slender, sword-shaped leaves and star-like blooms that flourish from late summer through to late autumn. As a result, they are excellent for bringing your garden to life in the Autumn months when most other flowing aquatic plants begin to die back.

5) Nymphaea alba

Nymphaea alba is Irelands only native water lily species, and it’s easy to see why this is one of our best sellers! This native species has beautiful green foliage accompanied by a stunning white flower. This variety is best grown at approximately 1 meter depth, however, it is commonly grown in deeper (and shallower) ponds. The large green foliage offers valuable surface coverage and shade in your pond. Your fish will love this!
